Become a Cavern Diver

To become a cavern dive instructor, you must complete a scuba diver course. This course includes four scuba dives: the first is an outdoor practice dive, where you will learn the basic techniques of handling line and reel, avoiding silt-outs, and air management. Your instructor will teach you how to plan your dive as well as how to keep your orientation and control your air. After the course you will be certified to dive in caves and other caves following safety rules.

Safety rules

Safety protocols for cave diving follow the Rule of Threes. The cave diver should have three types of light sources and at least two tanks. To ensure that they have enough gas for the dive, they must also split their gas into three parts. If the dive crew is experienced and has been diving in caves in the past, a more conservative gas management program is preferred. Cave divers must practice safe diving practices in order to avoid hazards from caves.

Equipment

Cave diving requires specialized equipment. Two types of safety reels are essential. The one should be used for running guideline and the other should be used while the diver is in the cavern. Make sure each diver has a safety line with enough line to reach the cave entrance. Most manufacturers will wrap the reels with guideline to prevent them from jamming when they make a new reel. To avoid jamming, remove approximately 10 meters (30ft), of line prior to use.

Maximum penetration

TDI offers a cavern diving course for scuba divers who want to dive in areas that do not allow direct vertical access. This includes dives into caverns, and overhangs. It is not mandatory to sign up for a cavern dive course. However, the course will provide the necessary skills to make the most of the environment. This course will help you navigate dangerously through the small spaces that are sometimes hidden from your eyes.
