Molasses Reef

Molasses Reef lies 6 miles offshore and is a popular destination for divers in the Florida Keys. The popular dive site was named after two shiploads full of Caribbean Molasses that ran aground there. Overhanging reef ledges, swim through tunnels, and towering coral pools are all part of this reef. You can also swim among the Spanish hogfish and squirrelfish that call the reef home. Popular diving landmark is the Spanish anchor, which measures 8 feet in length.

The underwater reef at Molasses Reef is the first one that you see when you drive into the Florida Keys. It has over 600 species and corals. Corals are mostly boulder-like, with gorgonians and brain corals as well as staghorn and staghorn corals and many types of sponges. You can find many types of turtles, lobsters, and other marine life at this location.

Joe's Tug

The aptly named "Joe's Tug" is a famous wreck site in the Florida Keys. The wreck is actually a 75-foot steel-hulled shrimper, which sank off Florida's coast in 1986. After being recovered by experts, the vessel has been refloated to become an artificial reef. It is a great place to learn, especially if there are no currents.

The ship was deliberately sunk but has been partially restored and refloated. It has been sitting in 65 feet water since 1989. Hurricane Georges tore down a portion of the wheelhouse, and also ripped it down in the middle. The wreck remains standing, thanks to reinforced metal. It is a popular spot for novice and intermediate divers.
